Ryan Garcia Drug Test Saga: Timeline and Controversy
The latest update in Ryan Garcia's drug test controversy reveals that the boxer has tested negative for a nandrolone metabolite. But what does this development signify, and how did Garcia find himself in this situation?
Let's delve into the timeline of events surrounding this issue:
April 19: Garcia misses weight for title bout with Devin Haney A day prior to Garcia's scheduled fight with Haney for the WBC super-lightweight title, he failed to make weight by 3.2lbs. Garcia, 25, stated that this was a deliberate move to enhance his chances against Haney. However, his failure to make weight rendered him ineligible to vie for the title. This incident followed a period of concerning online behaviour from Garcia, ranging from bizarre claims about aliens to more serious allegations of past trauma.
Consequently, Garcia underwent a mental health evaluation before facing Haney in the ring.
April 20: Garcia secures victory, knocking down the previously undefeated Haney three times, ultimately winning via a majority decision at the Barclays Center.
Post-fight, Garcia admitted that his pre-fight antics were mostly an "act," except for his admission of frequent alcohol consumption during his training camp.
May 1: Reports surface of Garcia's failed drug tests. News emerged on May 1 that Garcia had failed two drug tests during the week of his victory over Haney, testing positive for the banned substance Ostarine on April 19 and post-fight. Garcia vehemently denied ever using steroids. These reports were initially disclosed by boxing journalist Dan Rafael and ESPN.
In response to the reports, Garcia took to social media, vehemently denying any cheating and asserting his innocence.
Ostarine: A Closer Look
Ostarine, categorized as a selective androgen receptor modulator (Sarm), is known for its muscle-building properties, aiding in the regulation of body fat and promoting lean body mass.
In April 2023, it was revealed that former champion Amir Khan had tested positive for Ostarine on the night of his defeat to Kell Brook in February 2022. Khan, who subsequently retired, received a two-year backdated ban. Despite his positive test, Khan maintained his innocence, emphasizing that his performance against Brook was subpar.
Garcia is arguing that the minute amount of Ostarine found in his system could not have provided any performance-enhancing benefits. From my understanding, it doesn’t matter if it’s a minute amount, it’s banned and there is no leniency.
The outcome of Garcia's B-samples, set to be disclosed on May 22, may confirm the initial positive findings. Based on past cases, including those of Khan and others, Garcia could face a ban of up to two years, even if cleared of intentional doping.
As a boxing fan, it’s frustrating how often stuff like this interferes with the sport. Garcia outboxed Haney on the night, his boxing IQ is just better and Haney showed us that he just didn’t have enough power to hurt Garcia. It should be done and dusted.
I hope boxing can figure out how to eliminate these issues sooner rather than later. Maybe longer bans and bigger fines are necessary. Twenty years ago, bans of two years would mean a lot of missed fights but with boxers fighting once or maybe twice a year these days, a two-year ban doesn’t seem to have the same weight to it.
A'Ja Wilson Unveils Signature Nike Sneaker: A'One Set for 2025 Release
Las Vegas Aces star and two-time WNBA champion, A'Ja Wilson, is set to make her mark in the sneaker world with the upcoming release of her signature Nike shoe, A'One.
The announcement comes amidst public discussion following Caitlin Clark's multi-million dollar deal with Nike. Critics, including Atlantic columnist Jemele Hill, questioned Nike's priorities, highlighting Wilson's achievements and influence in the sport.
However, Wilson's Instagram post unveiling the deal (apparently in the world for a year) with Nike addressed these concerns head-on. Wearing a t-shirt that humorously stated 'Of Course I Have A Shoe Dot Com,' Wilson redirected users to Nike's website. There, Nike addressed the controversy directly, listing Wilson's numerous accolades and asserting her well-deserved place in the spotlight.
In response to the announcement, Wilson expressed her excitement in a press release, stating, "It's been incredible working with Nike toward a dream of having my collection, and it really is an honour to take this next step and become a Nike signature athlete." She emphasized the meticulous attention to detail in crafting the shoe to complement her game and style.
The shoe, aptly named A'One, is slated for release in 2025, marking a significant milestone in Wilson's career and further solidifying her impact on and off the court.
